Riverside Brass CD
Riverside Brass Quintet brings to the Upper Midwest a joyful
presentation of brass music at its best. The members of this
group have banded together for the express purpose of having
fun making music and bringing as much of that fun and joyful
expression to their audience as they can.
Music in the 21st century defies labels so suffice to say that you
will hear a wide variety of music from this group. They all
have a musical background that permit them to present classical,
folk, jazz, and music from other cultures. The players are
all connected with music education and desire to bring not only the
art of the sound but some understanding of the music
presented. They also want to make sure that you get to know
them as people, not just as performers, so their presentation
includes explanations of the music and their feelings about what
they are performing. The idea is for the audience to get a
presentation that speaks to everyone in as many ways as
The members of the RBQ all reside within shouting distance of the
Mississippi River with a couple tributaries thrown in for good
measure. Hence the name of the group. In addition, they
are all within stones throw (or maybe a nine iron) of Lake
- Trumpets: Dale is Professor Music and Director of Bands at the
College of Saint Benedict/St. John's University in St. Joseph and
Collegeville. He is an active soloist and is recently retired from
28 years as principal trumpet in the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra.
He is in demand around the country as a soloist and has
produced two CD volumes titled "Music for Trumpet and
Piano." His DMA is from the U of M and his MM is from Yale. He also
performs regularly with the newly formed Paramount Jazz Orchestra
and occasionally with the Lake Wobegon Brass Band and an auxiliary
trumpet in the Minnesota Orchestra.
- Trumpets: Pat is a graduate from St. Cloud State where he played
principal trumpets in the bands, jazz bands and orchestra. He
currently plays in the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra as principal
trumpet and is also a member of the Paramount Jazz Orchestra. He
has considerable experience as a lead player in jazz and rock
Diederichs - Horn: Patty has performance degrees from St. Cloud
State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has
performed in the Chicago and Baltimore areas. She is principal horn
in the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra and is an active player with
local professional productions and organizations.
Frohrip - Tenor Trombone: Kenton is a Professor Emeritus at St.
Cloud State University where he taught for 31 years. He has played
in every kind of group imaginable and currently plays in the Lake
Wobegon Brass Band, the Granite City Brass and the Paramount Jazz
Orchestra, which he founded and continues to manage. He retired
several years ago from the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra after 26
years as principal and section trombone. In addition he is a
contract player in the St. Cloud area and is active as a volunteer
in various arts organizations and as a board member of the St.
Cloud Symphony Orchestra. He holds a Ph.D. from the U of
Froelich - Bass Trombone: John has just retired after over thirty
years as a music educator in the Osseo public schools. In addition
he has served as a staff member with the State of Minnesota's
Office of Children Family and Learning and an interim professor at
Gustavus Adolphus College. He is a past president of the Minnesota
Music Educators Association. He performs with the Lake Wobegon
®Brass Band, the Basilica Brass (Minneapolis), the Minneapolis
Civic Orchestra and in the summer of 2003 spent the month of July
playing in the Rome (Italy) Festival Orchestra. He holds a Ph.D.
from the U of M and is a research associate in the college of
education at St. Cloud State University. He will be teaching at the
College of Saint Benedict during spring, 2006.
